Located at 30/32 boulevard Gambetta, at the crossroads of the Musiciens, Gambetta and Carré d'Or districts, the Jardin Alsace-Lorraine is a cool-island in the heart of Nice, a few steps from the city centre buzz. At once a stroll spot, a place to relax and an open-air museum, it bears witness to the city's rich historical past and to its will to pay tribute to its heroes and its culture.

📜 A history rooted in the Republic

The garden bears the name Alsace-Lorraine in tribute to the two regions annexed by the German Empire after the 1870 war. This highly symbolic name reflects Nice's deep attachment to the idea of national unity and to the memory of the republican struggles. Created at the end of the 19th century, the garden is emblematic of the Belle Époque urban planning of Nice, with its wide layout, mature trees and grand buildings, a long-standing favourite spot for winter visitors.

🌴 A vegetal oasis in the heart of the city

The garden is known for its botanical diversity, including palms, hackberry trees, cypresses, magnolias, as well as Mediterranean and exotic species. The generous shade, the winding paths, the wrought iron benches, the fountains and the large playground make it a space especially appreciated by families and walkers.

🗿 A true open-air museum: artworks and monuments to discover

The garden is home to several artworks and commemorative monuments, each carrying a strong historical or symbolic charge.

1. The kneeling woman sculpture

Placed at the centre of the large basin, this stone statue depicts a female figure in a folded position, in a gesture of contemplation or meditation. It adds a poetic atmosphere to the freshness of the fountain, while embodying introspection and inner peace.

2. The North Africa Memorial

A striking sculpture depicting a hand holding a funerary urn, this work pays tribute to the repatriates and to the soldiers who fell during the Algerian War (1954-1962). It is accompanied by a plaque bearing key dates and names, and is part of the Niçois duty of remembrance.

3. The bust of Marshal Lyautey

A major military figure of French colonisation in Morocco, Lyautey (1854-1934) is honoured here in a bronze sculpture bearing the inscription "L'Africain". This bust recalls the ties between France and its former colonies, and reflects the representations of the colonial era.

4. The Poilus monument (the four soldiers)

Four soldiers carved in red stone, carrying rifles, symbolise the French soldiers of the First World War. This imposing monument commemorates the sacrifice of the 14-18 combatants and echoes the collective memory of the Great War.

5. The wall of the resistance fighters of the 4th canton

Sober and powerful, this memorial lists the names of the Niçois resistance fighters who died for France during the Second World War. It bears the coat of arms of Nice (the Niçois eagle) and is a cornerstone of local remembrance.

6. The Resistance monument with the motto "Qui Vive ? France ! Quand Même !"

This imposing sculpture pays tribute to the French Resistance during the Occupation. The motto "Qui vive ? France ! Quand même !" bears witness to patriotic resilience. The sculpted scene depicts several figures symbolising the unity of the people around their values.

📍 A garden firmly anchored in the city

The Jardin Alsace-Lorraine occupies a central position, between boulevard Gambetta and boulevard Victor Hugo. Easily accessible, in particular via tramway line 2, it fits perfectly into the urban fabric of Nice. Without being isolated, it offers a true moment of quiet just a few minutes from the sea and the shopping streets. It is a place where we enjoy taking a break, sitting for a few minutes, or simply walking in the shade of the trees.

✨ A place apart, to enjoy day by day

This garden appeals through its simplicity and its soothing atmosphere. It does not try to do too much, but it has all the right ingredients to make you want to come back, with shaded benches, a touch of water, artworks to discover, and above all a gentle and familiar mood. Whether you walk through it every day or by chance, it always leaves a good impression. It is a living place, accessible to all, that becomes part of daily life without ever wearing out.

A setting that also reflects the real estate appeal of the Fleurs district, which we explore in this other article.
